J G Sharps

J G Sharps bar has been a popular local pub for many years. Originally it was called Hills and then Overdraught in the early 1980s. Nice cozy bar with extra seating at the back with a wee beer garden. Unfortunalty we don't know much history about the actual building. If anyone has any information about its history please contact us via oldlargs@hotmail.com

More details about J G Sharps can be found on their web site here.

The Smugglers

Leaving J G Sharps and heading down Nelson Street we used to have the Smugglers Bars. Tom Wallace opened this family pub on Nelson Street in 1984. He transformed two exisiting buildings, the Indian Restaurant "Raseela" and the toy shop "Over the Moon" into the new Smugglers Bar.

By 2002 the business and building were up for sale. The building was eventually demolished and new flats were built on the site.

The Three Reasons

Our next pub is The Three Reasons on Gallowgate Street.. The building which now holds the Three Reasons Pub and the Wee Plaice Chippy was originally the site of The Eagle Inn built prior to 1820. By 1825 it was the Weavers Arms and by 1912 it was called Macs Old Pier Vaults.

In 1926 this old building was replaced by todays building. Over the years it has housed the Playland Amusements, The Macari Tea Rooms, in the 1990s Papa Luigis restaurant , by 1994 Chatters Restaurant and Nardini's Brasserie in 1995. In 1996 is was renovated into Charlie Smiths and later changed owners and became the popular Three Reasons pub.
